All-condition capabilities and toughness are just some of the reasons why a 4x4 is the ideal vehicle for the worksite and off-road adventures. Need some questions answered? View our FAQ below to see if a 4 wheel drive is what you need.
Yes, there are a few different types of 4x4 systems, such as full-time 4WD (sending power to all wheels simultaneously), part-time 4WD (where usually only one axle and two wheels are powered) and automatic 4WD (a system that operates in 2WD until the system judges that 4WD is needed.)
A 4x2 is where only two wheels are powered by the engine. A 4x4 is where all four wheels are powered by the engine, but the front and rear axles are separated by a differential and a transfer case. An AWD is where all four wheels can be powered by the engine simultaneously via a front, rear and centre differential.
A 4x4 is not only great for suburban driving, but it also performs well off-road and on muddy and slippery roads, hills, snow, and rocky terrain. 4x4s are durable in such difficult conditions. The extra grip afforded by 4x4 vehicles also makes them great towing vehicles.
Whilst 4x4s have a reputation for being gas-guzzlers, Holden has released a range of models with diesel-powered engines, making them much more fuel-efficient. However, fuel usage ultimately depends on how you drive and the conditions at the time.
