Lots of people are talking about Holden's long range electric car, the Volt.

So what is it and how does it work?

LREV Explained
A LREV like the Volt is different because when the battery depletes, it has extended range technology that allows drivers to travel hundreds of additional kilometres.

In common usage, electric vehicle refers to a vehicle in which the propulsion system converts electrical energy from a battery into mechanical energy that moves the vehicle.

In battery-only powered vehicles consumer concern about range of an electric vehicle is referred to as "range anxiety".

Unlike a hybrid, a LREV like the Volt is always driven by the electric drive unit, meaning enhanced efficiency and the ability to drive electric-only.

In practice, hybrid vehicles typically require both sources - engine and battery - to provide full vehicle performance capability.

In a hybrid vehicle, the combustion engine is typically the larger of the two propulsion sources and provides most of the power during high power vehicle manoeuvres like off-line starts and freeway cruising.

A LREV like the Volt is different to a plug-in hybrid, due to the fact that the vehicle's wheels are always driven electrically by an electric unit.

A plug-in hybrid operates in much the same way as a normal hybrid vehicle, but can be recharged by 'plugging in'.

Even with energy remaining in the battery, the petrol engine will often be operating to achieve vehicle peak loads.

    The anti-lock disc braking system incorporates regenerative braking. This captures some of the energy normally lost during braking and converts it to electricity stored in the battery.

    The Volt is powered by General Motors' revolutionary electric propulsion system; it consists of a 16.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and electric drive unit that provide a pure electric range of up to 87 kilometres depending on conditions. It's a rechargeable energy storage system, which includes a liquid thermal management system with active control.

    Charging the Volt is as simple as plugging the provided cord into a conventional electrical outlet. Much like charging your phone, there is no need for electrical enhancements and you can achieve a full charge in under 6 hours*. If you require an even faster charge, this is easily sorted through Holden's energy partner - Better Place.

Without a traditional transmission, the Volts unique electric propulsion system gives you instant torque from a standstill. As a result, Volt can accelerate quickly, for a powerful and exhilarating drive. The Holden Volt is the long range electric car that's also really fun to drive. Countless hours in the wind tunnel influenced the styling of many exterior components including mirrors, a closed grill, rocker panels and the rear lip spoiler. In fact, the vertical blades that go from the bottom of the spoiler to the bottom of the bumper were designed specifically to trick the air into separating from the bumper more quickly, giving the Holden Volt extraordinary aerodynamics.

The result? A vehicle that looks sporty, quick, smooth and modern, yet achieves an extremely low coefficient of drag, which reduces noise and delivers greater economy and driving range.

Welcome to a completely unique driving environment. A sophisticated interior designed to inspire and energise you. Two interactive LCD screens work in tandem, giving you access to as little or as much visual intelligence as you desire. The configurable driver display screen shows information on speed, battery and petrol levels, tyre pressure and houses the two trip computers. Shift your gaze to the left and see the centre touch screen, displaying real-time information on energy use and power flow. It even displays efficiency feedback based on your driving style, climate settings and energy usage.

Driver Display

A dedicated digital readout, the configurable driver display gives you control of the gauges and the information supplied. In addition to showing vehicle speed and the efficiency gauge, the display screen also shows range and charge status for electric mode. The driver information centre, located in the lower centre of the display provides the driver with more information such as:

  • Tyre pressure monitoring
  • Forward collision alert
  • Navigation directions

Energy Information

The 7" touch screen display provides real-time information on energy use and power flow. It even displays efficiency feedback based on your driving style, climate settings and energy usage.

Satellite
Navigation

Never lose your way again with a fully integrated Satellite Navigation system, providing full colour mapping with integrated voice guidance and a point of interest function that allows you to find nearby businesses, tourist attractions or public facilities. Directions are even displayed on the driver display screen.

Entertainment
System

The Volt is equipped with all the must have technologies you have come to expect and then adds those you have always wanted in an entertainment system. DVD player, USB and iPod® connectivity, 30GB hard drive and Bluetooth® compatibility all feature as standard.

Phone
Integration

The Bluetooth® system^ offers hands-free mobile phone functionality and can be controlled via voice recognition or steering wheel controls, making using your mobile phone more convenient and safe.

^Certain mobile phones may not be compatible with the vehicles Bluetooth® system.

Climate
Control

Volt is equipped with a single zone climate control system which automatically controls fan speed, air delivery mode and recirculation to heat or cool the vehicle to the selected temperature. The climate control system is controlled with the touch sensitive controls or via the centre touch screen.

Safety

The Holden Volt is fully equipped with a comprehensive range of standard safety features to give you peace of mind. The Volt thinks ahead, using the latest safety systems like lane departure warning and forward collision alert to help prevent accidents before they occur. Paired with active technologies such as ESC, traction control, 8 airbags and a unique safety cell, the Holden Volt has you covered. The culmination of all these features and technologies help give the Volt the highest possible 5 Star ANCAP safety rating.

Safety Cell

Adding to this list of safety features, the cabin is reinforced with high-strength steel throughout. Meanwhile, front and rear "crush zones" are designed to compress in a controlled manner, helping absorb and channel energy away from the cabin.

Eight Airbags

Includes dual front, front seat side and curtain airbags as well as knee airbags for the driver and front passenger.

Battery Compartment

The battery compartment is formed in a T-section, centrally mounted inside the crash protection structure. It's housed in a dust-proof, watertight compartment made of high-strength steels, meaning that in the unlikely event of crash-impact reaching it, it will be fully protected.

Forward
collision
alert

Allows you to maintain a safe gap from the car in front of you. The system is activated once the Volt's speed reaches 40 km/h. If the Volt approaches within the gap set, a tone will sound alerting the driver to brake to avoid a collision.

Lane Departure Warning

If you veer or swerve out of your marked lane, a front camera senses this and will sound an alert to prevent you from veering into another lane.

Front & rear
parking Sensors

Front and rear parking sensors with rear view camera system helps alert you to certain stationary obstacles when backing up at low speeds.

Pedestrian
friendly alert

This manually triggered system can help alert people who may not hear the Volt approaching at low speed.
